It is accepted that the 1964 Pontiac® GTO™ was the first true “Muscle Car” made by Detroit. Working to keep ahead of the competition, the 1966 GTO set a sales record with 96,946 cars sold. It combined great looks with unmatched performance. With its Tri-Power motor, it could cut the quarter mile in 14.05 seconds.
The GTO name was European, but the car was All-American muscle. Based on their completely restyled mid-size LeMans coupe, Pontiac added the 389 V-8 engine and pumped up the horsepower to 360 with 3 carbs and Ram-Air induction. While Pontiac referred to these cars as GTO Tigers, they became affectionately known as “goats”.
