North American Aviation created the P-51D Mustang in response to a British requirement in 1940. Powered originally by an Allison V-1710 engine, the performance at high altitudes was greatly increased later by a Rolls Royce Merlin engine Additional improvements that appeared on the P-51D included a bubble canopy on a cut down fuselage spine, and six .50 caliber machine guns. The P-51D was the final Mustang variant to see combat during World War II, and it was considered to be one of the most successful fighters of that era.

There are two sets of markings provided with this kit of the P-51D. One is the Beautiful Doll flown by Lt. Col. John D. Landers awhi
